PRESS STATEMENT : 27 FEBRUARY 2011

PSM CONDEMNS ARREST OF HRP AND HINDRAF SUPPORTERS
CALL FOR POLICE TO STOP THE VIOLENCE AND RELEASE ALL DETAINED

Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) condemn the nationwide arrests and crackdown of HRP and Hindraf leaders as well as their supporters. We also have reliable information that many others were arrested simply because they were Indians.

PSM condemn the action by the police and calls upon the Najib Government to stop this double standards. Just two days ago, Datuk Muhyiddin Yassin – the Deputy Prime Minister called on Libya leaders to allow the people there to demonstrate peacefully. Why then are Hindraf and HRP supporters not allowed to exercise their freedom of speech and assembly here? Why this double standards?

HRP has already notified their intention to conduct the rally in a peaceful way. They have also notified the police and said they plan to lodge a police report at the Dang Wangi police station. If the police would have allowed this peaceful action to be done and negotiated with the organizers, then all this violence, road-blocks and arrest would be unnecessary.

Hishammuddin Hussein being the Home Minister and an UMNO leader in which HRP plans to lodge the report against is definitely not the right person to handle the current situation. That is why it is fundamental for the IPCMC to be formed immediately.

PSM calls upon the immediate and unconditional release of all those detained. All those who are injured must be given immediate medical treatment. The People will continue to assembly and rally against injustice and racism. The State has to respect this.
