A
group of leaders of local Chinese organizations and civil rights
activists today showed their support openly to Arutchelvan (Arul),
candidate of Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) for Semenyih state seat. They
said that Arul is always at the forefront of national movement and
concerned of issues of grassroots people. for this reason, he is the
most qualified man to represent the people in the Selangor state
legislative assembly.
These
representatives of Chinese organizations and civil rights movement
called for a press conference together with Arul at PSM’s election
campaign center in Semenyih.
Representatives
present in the press conference included seasoned political commentator
Lee Ban Chen; prominent human rights activist Dr Kua Kia Soong; Liau
Kok Fah, chairman of the Civil Rights Committee of the Kuala Lumpur and
Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall (KLSCAH); Kong Wee Cheng, representative
of KLSCAH Youth; Lee Soo Wei, representative of the LLG Foundation
Development Centre Civil Society Committee; Yong Kin Yin, representative
of Malaysian Youth and Student Democratic Movement (DEMA); and academic
Lew Bon Hoi.
In
relation to the three-cornered fight in Semenyih state constituency,
they made their stand clear that Arul is the most winnable and qualified
candidate among the three.
Echoing
the call for regime change and fighting against corruption, they called
on people in Semenyih to reject Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate
together with all Malaysians nationwide and pool their votes for the
best candidate — PSM candidate Arul who uses PSM’s party symbol “fist” —
to avoid vote splitting which will only benefit the BN candidate.
Both
Dr. Kua and Lee stressed that Arul has been active in scores of major
national movements. He is always at the forefront to walk together with
the people and never absent from any struggle of the people like the
Abolish ISA movement and campaigns against corruption of the BN
government.
PSM
always fights for issues concerning the grassroots people including the
minimum wages for the labour class, free public healthcare of good
quality, anti oil price hike, and so on. For example, PSM has pioneered
the struggle for free education, an issue of great concern among the
youth and subsequently won the endorsement of Pakatan Rakyat (PR).
In addition, all present in the press conference also expressed their appreciation of Arul’s long-term hard work in Semenyih.
Arul
has engaged in organizing the grassroots community in Semenyih since he
was a student studying in the National University of Malaysia (UKM). He
has lived and served the people in Semenyih for more than two decades.
Arul had been appointed as a Kajang municipal councilor after the
General Elections 2008.
“Who is the most qualified candidate for Semenyih state seat? The answer is as clear as the moon in the sky,” Lee Ban Chen said.
Although
voters in Semenyih who aspire for a regime change may feel confused
because of the three-cornered fight, these representatives of Chinese
organizations and civil rights movement urged the people in Semenyih to
pool their votes to PSM candidate Arul, the most qualified, winnable,
principled candidate who has never wavered in fighting against the
56-year-long brutal regime of UMNO/BN, to send a fearless voice to the
Selangor state legislative assembly to safeguard the rights of the
grassroots people.
