PRESS STATEMENT : 16 APRIL 2013

PSM GETS CLEARANCE FROM MEMBERS

Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) held its Emergency National Committee Meeting at the Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall on 15^th April 2013 attended by 93 delegates.

The members debated several issues and decided on the following:

1.         After taking into consideration the general mood of the rakyat who do not want three corner fights  in this election and having taken into account the strong appeal by the PR for PSM to use one of the 3 PR logos and after taking into consideration the ABU concept - PSM members yesterday have reversed the decision taken in the National Committee meeting of  13 January 2013 which endorsed PSM stand all four seats in the coming election under the PSM logo. As per the current decision, the negotiation team has been given some leeway to discuss PSM candidates using PR logos in some of the seats though with conditions.

2.         The PSM meeting further maintained that without a doubt, PSM will contest in the four seats and sought the PR not to field candidates there.

3.         PSM NC meeting also rejected the request made by 12 non PSM members mostly from the PR to allow them to stand in the elections on the PSM logo. The decision was taken as it goes against the PSM’s own election standards where candidates must have worked in an area for 5 years and endorsed by the local branch. PSM also does not allow parachute candidates.

4.         PSM meeting also felt that they have a winnable candidate in its Cameron Highland Branch Secretary Suresh Kumar who has done tremendous work in Cameron Highlands. The environmental groups are also backing him. We call upon the DAP to consider  giving way for Suresh Kumar to stand in the election in order for PSM to take on Palanivel and win the Camerons seatfor the PR.
